Officer, driver injured after man crashes into cop car during traffic stop on 219

Richland Township police have released new information regarding Wednesday night's crash on Route 219, in Cambria County, that sent two people to the hospital.

Police say a Richland Township police officer was conducting a traffic stop, near the Elton Road exit, and a second officer had stopped to assist.

Authorities say during the course of the traffic stop, a man had entered 219 southbound, via the bypass, and continued traveling along the berm of the road.

Police say the driver struck the assisting officer's vehicle, while the officer was inside.

Authorities say the driver's vehicle then caught fire following the collision.

Both the suspect driver and the officer were transported to a nearby hospital, and police say the officer has since been released.

Police say charges are pending against the suspect driver who caused the crash.

Two people were hospitalized after a crash involving a police vehicle Wednesday night in Cambria County.

It happened around 9:25 PM on Route 219 southbound near the Elton Road exit.

Cambria County 911 said the two people injured were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

Richland Fire Department and Police Department, as well as East Hills EMS responded to the scene.
