DC police officer shot, 2 suspects in custody: authorities

A police officer was shot in Washington, D.C. on Monday afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

An MPD official said the officer was shot in the Northwest area. The reported location is several blocks from MPD's Fourth District station.

During a news conference on Monday, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said that as the officer was driving to work in his personal vehicle when he noticed a car driving erratically. The car abruptly stopped in front of him, and then one suspect exited the vehicle and shot the officer.

After the shooting, the officer drove himself to the Fourth District police station and was promptly taken to the hospital, Smith said.

The officer was able to get a partial plate number from the suspect's car, Smith said. MPD tracked the vehicle into Landover, Maryland, where the car crashed and two adult, men were taken into custody.

"We will not tolerate this type of violence in our city," Smith said during a news conference.

The officer is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and no other injuries or deaths were reported, police said.

"He is at an area hopsital with his family and our support team," Smith said, adding that he is a captain and 18-year veteran.

No other injuries or deaths were reported. A WJLA crew is heading to the scene.
