These include the Niflheim sets, Muspelheim sets, Valkyrie Armor, Traveler Armor, Tyr’s Armor, and others. To help you out on your journey, we’ve put together this guide on the best armor in God of War.

Muspelheim Armor
The Muspelheim Armor sets work very much like the Niflheim sets. To unlock them, you have to find the four pieces of the Muspelheim cipher. That will put them in the shop, and you’ll then have to travel to Muspelheim to get the materials. Good luck in Surtr’s Gauntlet. All of them revolve around dealing extra Burn damage in different situations.
Smouldering Brimstone Armor
Every part of the Smouldering Brimstone has the moderate perk activation chance of Aura of Fire. It increases strength and restores a small amount of health when taking damage. Equiping the whole set increases the chance of activation.
Stats | Chest | Wrist | Waist |
---|---|---|---|
Strength | 24 | 18 | 18 |
Defence | 31 | 24 | 24 |

Fallen Ash Armor
Every piece of the Fallen Ash armor has a moderate perk activation chance of Retaliation of Fire. It inflicts concussive Burn damage to nearby enemies when taking damage. Equipping the whole set increases the activation chance.

---|---|---|---|
Strength | 10 | 7 | 7 |
Defence | 40 | 30 | 30 |
Blazing Magma Armor
Every piece of the Blazing Magma armor has a moderate perk activation chance of Magma Shield. It forms a fiery shield that inflicts Burn damage to enemies and prevents interruptions by attacks when taking damage. Equipping the whole set increases the activation chance.
Stats | Chest | Wrist | Waist |
---|---|---|---|
Strength | 10 | 7 | 20 |
Defence | 34 | 26 | 26 |
Cooldown | 22 | 16 | 16 |
Valkyrie Armor
The Valkyrie armor is pretty powerful, but you’ll have to suffer through a lot to get it. To unlock the set pieces, you’ll have to defeat Valkyries that are strewn around God of War. Each of them has a low chance of dropping one of the armor pieces, so it’s a toss-up as to which Valkyrie you’ll get the armor from. That said, by the time you kill them all, you’ll have the whole armor.
Every Valkyrie Armor piece grants a different bonus. The chest armor has a low perk activation chance of Unstoppable Aura, which prevents interruptions from enemy attacks on successful hits. The wrist armor has a low perk activation chance of instantly refreshing all Runic Attack cooldowns on any successful Runic Attack kill. Finally, the waist armor has a high perk activation chance to grant a blessing of Runic when using a Runic Attack.
Stats | Chest | Wrist | Waist |
---|---|---|---|
Strength | 16 | 12 | 12 |
Runic | 12 | 9 | 9 |
Defence | 55 | 42 | 42 |
Vitality | 9 | 6 | 6 |
Cooldown | 23 | 17 | 17 |
Traveller’s Armor – Path of the Zealot Trophy
The first time you kill a Traveller (the hulking enemies with shields on their backs and enormous swords), the game will tell you that you can now craft the new type of armor. While this armor is not as strong as the ones above, it’s still pretty great and will serve you well. You have to kill Travellers and collect their Armor Shards, Grisly Trophies, and so on for crafting materials.
The chest armor from this set slowly regenerates a protective barrier that absorbs a single attack. The wrist armor increases the damage inflicted from all bare-handed attacks by 6% (stacks up to 18% max). The waist armor has no special perks.
Stats | Chest | Wrist | Waist |
---|---|---|---|
Strength | 10 | 7 | 7 |
Defence | 34 | 25 | 25 |
Vitality | 20 | 14 | 14 |
Tyr’s Armor
Tyr’s Armor is an excellent set that you can get relatively early on. There’s several Wayward Spirits that you can find by exploring around the Lake of Nine. Do the favors that they ask you (Hammer Fall for the Gauntlets, Dead Freight for the Cuirass, The Anatomy of Hope for the Belt), and you’ll earn the recipes for the Tyr’s Armor set.
All three pieces of Tyr’s Armor has a low perk activation chance to grant a short boost to Strength, Defence, or Runic when taking damage.
Stats | Chest | Wrist | Waist |
---|---|---|---|
Strength | 5 | 3 | 3 |
Runic | 4 | 3 | 3 |
Defence | 24 | 18 | 18 |
Vitality | 3 | 2 | 2 |
Luck | 6 | 4 | 4 |
Cooldown | 7 | 5 | 5 |
Ancient Armor – Primordial Trophy
To get the Ancient Armor set, you’ll need to kill the Ancients and collect their hearts as crafting materials. This set’s perk is defense from elemental damage: Frost, Burn, and Poison. Each piece gives you 15% resistance, and it all stacks up to 45% max.

Best Atreus Armor
There are three different armors that Atreus can wear, and all three have their Legendary level. All three have their practical uses, so which one is the best depends on your gameplay style and current needs. The Legendary Sharpshooter Garb gives Aimed Shot (enemies in air take increased damage), Barrage (when rapid firing, last arrow inflicts extra damage), and Arial Dominance (arrows fired in air inflict additional damage). This is the one that I ended up using the most.
The Legendary Runic Vestment grants Healthstone Assist (Atreus sometimes finds Healthstones when Kratos is injured), Healthstone Enhancement (increases Healthstone potency) and Runic Attunement (arrows deal additional Status damage 8 seconds after Runic Summon). This armor is incredibly useful when battling in Muspelheim or fighting the Valkyries.
Lastly, the Legendary Fighter Tunic. Its bonuses are Expose Weakness (enemies choked by Atreus take increased damage), Enhanced Strikes (increases Stun damage from Atreus’s melee attacks) and Iron Grip (Atreus can choke enemies for longer). This is arguably the least useful armor, since Atreus is much more useful at range.
